The Department's research work is focused on the study of yield, tree response and forest ecosystems to changing climatic and environmental conditions. New silvicultural techniques and approaches are studied to provide for future development of our forests. An important task of our department is also developing knowledge and expertise in ecological and environmental modelling using the most up-to-date knowledge and techniques. Our research and professional work is in keeping with the vision and strategy of the Slovenian Forestry Institute.

In 2006, we actively led or participated in four EU projects (5th and 6th OP EU) – Millennium, Eumon, Agrifor in Alpenenergywood. We were also engaged in several Slovenian projects funded by different Slovenian governmental bodies and other users of our services.
We closely cooperate with other departments of our Institute and several Slovenian institutions (IJS) and universities (Universities of Ljubljana, Maribor and Primorska), as well as with various European (METLA, Swansea University, and others) and American institutes (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory).
